Some of the Biggest Vaping Misconceptions

Well, not quite, as we realize a vaping blog article probably wasn’t on many wish lists around the world, but still. Let’s take a look at a few more common fallacies surrounding vaping.

* Vaping companies are purposely targeting children.

This one stems from a couple of different areas – first, the history of tobacco companies seemingly marketing directly to minors in decades past, with cartoon characters like Joe Camel and novelty items like candy cigarettes; and second, the perception that the many fun and fruity flavors of e-juice are created solely to entice kids. Let’s address both of these separately.

The first point is valid, as many parents remember the days when tobacco smoking was everywhere, in magazines, on family-friendly television shows, and even in the candy aisle. Whether they admitted it or not, many saw the elimination of Joe Camel and other cartoonish characters surrounding tobacco brands as implicitly conceding the fact that these marketing initiatives were somewhat targeted at minors. It wasn’t that long ago, so adults are within reason to be concerned that the same is happening with vaping companies. But is that a valid fear?

Not really. First of all, vaping is demonstrably safer than smoking, so even if vaping companies were actively targeting minors, it would be far less concerning than tobacco companies doing the same. And that’s a BIG if. More and more states (in addition to nearly countless cities and counties) are opting to ban vaping and the sale of vaping equipment and devices to minors. And with the pending FDA regulations it will soon be illegal to do so nationwide.

But why the fun, fruity flavors? Well, simply – because they taste good and adults like things that taste good, too. There isn’t some magical switch that gets turned off once you hit 18 that prevents you from enjoying candy, soda, bubble gum, and sugary cereals. Just because an e-liquid flavor is
modeled after those taste profiles doesn’t mean they are targeting children – children go on to become adults and many like to indulge themselves with a fun, new flavor now and again. Trix may be “for kids”, but many adults like them too.

* All vaping devices are e-cigs.

This is definitely more of a minor annoyance, but it’s something that comes up often enough to warrant discussion (albeit a brief one). Calling any electronic vaporizing device an e-cig isn’t a huge deal, but it is inaccurate.

When most non-vapers think of e-cigs, they are actually thinking of e-cigs – long, slim, slender devices that look very similar to a traditional tobacco cigarette. You typically only find these among new vapers and at roadside convenience stores and gas stations, since there is very little option for customization and very limited flavor choices available.

What are far more common are both vape pens and mods. If e-cigs are for starters, vape pens (also known as Advanced Personal Vaporizers or APVs) are for intermediate vapers. They allow for users to refill their own flavors, alter the power levels to produce more vapor, and are usually under $100.

Moving on to the most advanced are mods – more customization, more vapor producing capabilities, and more associated costs. If you go to any vaping competition, you are likely to exclusively see entrants using mods. Again, not a major distinction, but one that’s worth bringing up.

* Vaping doesn’t help anyone quit smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Thankfully, this myth is beginning to go away. There has been a steady stream of studies that has shown that vaping can be an effective smoking cessation method, and more and more are seemingly coming all the time. Here’s an excerpt from the University of Oklahoma study linked in the previous sentence:

“In a large, international survey of current, former, or never users of e-cigarettes, 72 percent of users reported that e-cigarettes helped them to deal with cravings and withdrawal symptoms, 92 percent reported reductions in their smoking when using e-cigarettes, and only 10 percent reported that they experienced the urge to smoke tobacco cigarettes when using the e-cigarette. Moreover, of more than 2000 former smokers in this survey, 96 percent reported that the e-cigarette helped them to stop smoking.”
